Stanford vs. Oregon State Score, Recap & Analysis
Collins did not lead the Beavers to an upset of No. 21 Stanford on Friday evening at Reser Stadium, but he gave the 37,302 fans on hand a reason to leave with eyes on the future.
Tonight’s Stanford Cardinal vs Oregon State college football game has a start time schedule of 7:00pm pacific time, 10:00pm eastern time, and airs on TV channel Fox Sports 1 (FS1). Although he threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns, he mostly gave way to the beastly Cardinal rushing attack.
The 21st-ranked Cardinal led 21-17 at halftime before outscoring the Beavers 14-0 in the third quarter.
It was an evening in which Stanford’s offense physically dominated the Beavers. Collins completed 20 of 36 passes and hit some big plays down the field.
The treacherous situation starts with the uncertain status of senior quarterback Kevin Hogan and his sprained left ankle. The redshirt freshman ran for nine yards on each of the two previous plays before his score. This week, the Pac-12 has as many ranked teams (six) as does the SEC.
Though the Beavers drew within 21-17 on a 24-yard field goal by Garrett Owens, it could have been worse for Stanford. Martinez halted the drive by hitting Collins on a third-down blitz, forcing an incompletion. But Stanford couldn’t find the end zone, and Conrad Ukropina missed a short field goal.
Stanford got exactly the start it wanted, with McCaffrey plowing through the Beavers repeatedly on a 63-yard scoring drive. Sanders got loose for a 65-yard touchdown run on the Cardinal’s next offensive play and a 42-24 advantage was too much to overcome.
The Beavers answered after an interception by Noland-Lewis gave them the ball at their 42. Both interferences were committed by the long snapper Ryan Navarro.
The Cardinal came roaring back with a couple of big runs to from Love and McCaffrey.
– Jordan Villamin caught seven passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
The second half turnover could have been even more costly had it not been for Sanders. It was all but over at that point. Attendance in the OSU student section was a record 9,605 … for the second straight game, OSU tight end Caleb Smith did not dress. “You have to recruit depth and thankfully, we have enough depth to get through a game like this”.
One late development of note came on a Collins completion to Storm Barrs-Woods, above. In recent years, the Cardinal’s bruising style made them a matchup nightmare for the rest of the division – especially Oregon, which lost to Stanford in back-to-back years with national title hopes at stake.
And credit the Beavers for avoiding a potential disaster to open the second half. They can also take solace in the fact that Stanford is now one of the hottest teams in the Pac-12.
No. 21 Stanford (3-1 overall, 2-0 Pac-12) followed a formula similar to the one it used in a 41-31 victory over USC.
Oregon State dropped back to 2-2, and 0-1 in conference.
