Target to move away from gender-based signs
For example, in the kids’ Bedding area, signs will no longer feature suggestions for boys or girls, just kids. Signs designating some items for girls and others for boys will be taken down.
Target announced Friday it would be phasing out some gender-based signs in its stores.
In the toy section, Target will no longer use colors like pink and blue on the back walls of shelves to denote gendered sections of the department.
“In some cases, like apparel, where there are fit and sizing differences, it makes sense”.
A few commenters on Target’s statement criticized the retailer for giving in to pressure that included promoting politically correct fads and homogenizing the genders, but many other customers were pleased with Target’s decision. “We heard you, and we agree”. “Eliminating these gender typed divisions will help kids learn a toy is a toy, a show is a show, fun is fun”.
Bechtel, the mother who was one of those who started the conversation on gender-based stereotyping in stores, lauded Target for their progressiveness. The image went viral and sparked a debate about the appropriateness of gender-specific toys. Even the design of the aisles would be changed to be more gender-inclusive, with toy aisles changed to include wood paneling.
“I’m really pleased that so many people saw the potential for change and joined in asking for things to be better, and that Target listened”.
