The Stewart Era Is Over: ‘Daily Show’ Wins Three Emmys

Under Jon Stewart’s tenure, the Comedy Central program became a cultural institution, with Mr. Stewart himself becoming a trusted news voice despite – or because of – the thread of humor running through his commentary as the show poked fun at the news of the day. I never know. Sometimes I think he’s – I think he’s nearly working as a double agent. I don’t know what it is and that’s what makes him exciting. Jon Stewart is the best – he’s my hero.

The 31-year-old South African comedian appeared on “The Daily Show” a couple of times prior to being named host.

Comedy Central has announced the first week’s roster, and it’s a varied one with celebrities, a politician and a CEO. “[That kind of criticism] is one of the most hard things to go through”, Noah said.

“Oh, everyone, everyone, everyone on the street, everyone in an office, everyone on Twitter, everyone has advice for me, everyone stops me to give me advice”, he said. “Marriage was not in my agenda”. “My experience with him is that he is an incredibly thoughtful and considerate and smart individual”, he said.

For someone who uses the word “terrified”, Trevor Noah looks anything but.

In his standup routine, Noah spins a yarn about joining up with a gang of “fellow” albinos in the township.

NOAH: Well, I mean, he’s an interesting guy.

As with many in his profession, a painful past provides rich material.

The Daily Show With Trevor Noah will premiere on Monday, September 28. “You’d literally be angry about everything”.

That’ll be Noah’s first chance to tangle with a prominent politician.

Gesturing behind him, he added, “These people, I love desperately”. A place where there was a bloodless revolution, where Nelson Mandela, let out of jail after 27 years, made peace with his persecutors.

After being nominated for an Emmy 16 times, Jon Hamm finally snagged the lead actor award for his portrayal of Mad Men’s Don Draper … the Emmy he’s been nominated for every year since 2008. He bypassed the steps to the Emmy stage, scrambling onto it on his stomach.

Noah reluctantly obeyed, and quickly discovered in his maiden routine, ad-libbing as the audience began to laugh, that he had a knack for this thing.

I would imagine there has been something of a different vibe at the standup shows Noah has performed since the announcement last March that he would be taking over The Daily Show.
