Theater attacker had propane, lighter fluid
In police reports released Thursday, it was revealed that the Antioch movie theater attacker had previous thoughts of suicide and homicide.
Montano’s pepper spray, hatchet and deceptively real-looking gun sent patrons into a screaming panic. All total, he hit three people with pepper spray and one person with the ax.
The investigation continues at a theatre just outside of Nashville, Tennessee tonight, where police stopped an attack during a showing of “Mad Max: Fury Road“.
According to the report, while at the home, it was agreed police would give Montano a ride to the airport so he could go to Chicago after his mother could “no longer deal with his mental instability”.
The documents, filed on August. 28 of that year, say that on July 31 Montano punched a man police call “a family or household member”. Two women inside the theater said Montano was staring them down. Police are trying to determine a motive.
Reynolds felt a huge sense of relief when his mother stated there was a chance she could have been at the theater complex around the time of the attack, which occurred just after 1 p.m.
Police say the suspect in a shooting at a Nashville-area movie theater was armed with a hatchet and a gun before being shot by an officer. Montano was struck and killed.
“He had a hand up underneath the duffel bag he was wearing over his chest”, Aaron said, adding that he was carrying the ax in his other hand.
The propane tank Montano carried had been gashed, possibly by the ax, and the gas escaped.
Some notified police officers, who had responded to a nearby traffic accident.
Vincente Montano, 29, battled mental illness for more than a decade and had a history of suicidal and homicidal thoughts, according to Murfreesboro Police reports.
His mother, Denise Pruett, called police for help at least twice in 2004, telling officers in February he was destructive and broke a coffee table and jewelry box.
In September of that year, police returned after the mother and son had an argument over him not mowing the lawn, the reports show. She said she hadn’t seen Montano since 2013 and he was a “paranoid schizophrenic” who had trouble taking care of himself.
“My mom told me that she and my brother were actually thinking about going to the movies that day, but decided not to go”, Reynolds said.
Attempts to reach Pruett through telephone numbers listed for her and other messages were unsuccessful.
She lived next door to Montano for a decade and told CBS News police were regularly called to the house. Not only had he been committed four times already but he was arrested in 2004 for assault and resisting arrest.
This incident is significant especially considering it occurred so soon following the tragic events of the shooting at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, where three people (including the shooter) were killed and nine others were injured during a screening of the film Trainwreck.
Officer Frith, who is now considered a hero for his quick response, credits the police department for training officers what to do in those type of situations.
Such attacks have become all too common, said Metro Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson.
