Timeline of events after fatal police shooting in Ferguson
After laying soft toys on the spot in the middle of Canfield Drive where his son came to rest, Brown spoke of his persistent grief. Federal officials concluded there was no evidence to disprove testimony by Wilson that he feared for his safety, nor was there reliable evidence that Brown had his hands up in surrender when he was shot. Sunday will mark one year since Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.
Brown’s death helped spur a national “Black Lives Matter” movement that raised hard questions about law enforcement attitudes toward minorities and the militarization of police.
On Saturday night, more than 200 protesters carrying bullhorns, drums and signs demonstrated against police in Ferguson, with some placing the roasted head of a pig on a barricade in front of officers. Those statistics haven’t changed. Steps have been taken to establish a citizen police review board.
The city chose the new judge, city manager and police chief on an interim basis. But witnesses provided a sharply different account, saying Brown was shot with his arms up as he tried to flee the officer’s fire.
‘That means helping families and young people, ‘ he said, ‘whatever I can do to empower us as a people‘.

A man nearby said, “They killed my brother”. “But we’re working on that”.

Ms Walker said she was recently pulled over for speeding by a Ferguson police officer and was surprised when the officer seemed to go out of his way to be non-threatening and let her off with a warning. “That issue has stopped everything from moving forward”. (Prosecutors said that a man who was arrested and charged in the shooting admitted firing the gun but claimed he was not aiming at officers.). The city council has new members, too, several of whom are black.
“They’ve made some good positive steps in the right direction”, Mr Gray said. He agrees change is a necessity. During the protest, he called for further action to be taken.

The shooting led to protests, some violent, and the unrest escalated again in November when a St. Louis County grand jury determined that Wilson did nothing wrong.
Anthony Gray, a lawyer for the Brown family, said he was pleased to see a number of changes at the police department, particularly the appointment of an African-American chief of police, even though it is only an interim appointment.
Anger still lingers on a year after Brown was killed.
But beyond the rage and angst of years of being treated differently, they know it is time for them to step up as well.
To many, the plaque is about the quest for those answers, and what America learned about itself in the process. “I think a year later, what you see is a community that’s much more engaged, wholly engaged”.
