TN theater shooter had psychiatric problems
Witness video from the scene showed a heavy police presence at the movie theater.
The man who attacked several people at a movie theater in Nashville, Tennessee had ties to Rockford, the Journal Stand reports. More people entered the auditorium, and police said Montano suddenly doused the two women with pepper spray.
Moviegoers who heard the commotion quickly informed authorities – already on the scene after a nearby traffic accident, police said. “Montano … ultimately attempted to flee out the rear door of the theater”.
After Frith’s encounter with the suspect, police stopped the movie.
Frith said during a press conference that he and three other officers responded to the theater.
That nagging question comes up again and again when a mentally ill shooter opens fire on a crowd.
Frith said he and other officers first went into a projection room and then went down into the theater.
Aaron said the gunman had sprayed pepper spray throughout the theater.
“As Montano’s gun popped, sounding like a small-caliber pistol, four SWAT members fired”, police said in a statement.
Initial reports indicated the suspect was also seen in or near the Southeast Branch Library prior to the shooting, but police Chief Steve Anderson later said there was no information to indicate that.
A SWAT team shot him dead as he tried to leave the theater through a back door.
Aaron said Montano had multiple and continuous opportunities to end the situation and surrender, but he chose not to.
Montano pointed his pellet gun at an officer and pulled the trigger, prompting the officer to fire one round from his patrol rifle, officials said. Police later discovered he also had a lighter, lighter fluid, and a small camping-style propane canister.
The propane canister was found gashed with the hatchet, which let the gas escape.
Montano finally stepped out of the theater through a fire exit, where another cluster of officers was waiting for him.
Those officers fired about 40 rounds, killing Montano.
“When it was going down, in the thick of it, we had a job to do”, he said. “I don’t remember anything but directing the other officers where they needed to be”.
Before he began his six-year career with the department, Frith was deployed overseas with the Marines. He felt on his face what seemed to be the pressure blast from a weapon.
“I feel eternally grateful that were able to be completely unharmed”, he said.
“I didn’t even know about it until someone added me on Twitter. It’s my choice”.
The body of the suspect is removed from a movie theater following a shooting Wednesday, August 5, 2015 …
Aaron said police had not uncovered a motive, but he said Montano had been committed for psychiatric treatment at least four times over the past decade. He broke a coffee table and a jewelry box. Montano was 18 at the time.
In the missing person’s report, Montano’s mother told authorities that he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2006. Pruett has been unable to be reached by The Tennessean. Officers transported Montano to the hospital for a mental evaluation. The police department is researching his background.
But on Wednesday, as a police officer in his hometown, he engaged an enemy who was a lot closer than any had ever been.
Nashville police also noted that Montano had been arrested in 2004 for assault and resisting arrest. He eventually dismissed the charges on the condition Montano continue to take his medications and “comply with his doctor’s recommendations”, according to court documents.
In the spring of 2005, Montano enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University as a biology major.
The caller described what the assailant, identified by police as 29-year-old Vincente David Montano, did Wednesday afternoon before he was shot and killed by police. They had red dye all over them that looked like blood, so he called for ambulances. According to Texas law enforcement officers, the woman gave the name: Vincente Anastacio Montano.
In her conversation with police she said she hadn’t seen or heard from him in three years.
