Sen. John McCain said Monday Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump doesn’t need to apologize to him for remarks about his long captivity in Vietnam, but should tell veterans and their families that he’s sorry.
Will they stick with presidential candidate Donald Trump even after he ridiculed the service and sacrifice of a man who spent almost six years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam?
Although unrepentant, Trump allowed after the Iowa event that McCain might be a hero after all, but saidpeople who “fought hard and weren’t captured and went through a lot, theyget no credit”.
In an op-ed Monday, Trump remained defiant, pointing out that John McCain called supporters who attended his rally in Arizona “crazies”. Yes, John McCain was repeatedly tortured by his North Vietnamese captors.
Before Trump’scomments Saturday, McCain had said the real estate mogul was firing up “crazies”. “It’s ridiculous. And I do think it is a disqualifier as commander in chief”.
Trump also continued to criticize McCain for not doing enough to support fellow veterans. Also amusing/frightening: “While his competitors may be busy working through thick stacks of books on world affairs to prove their qualifications, Mr. Trump says he has little use for such”.
MCCAIN: Listen, I love the debate and I love my people and so I meant it in a way that – in a term of affection, to be honest with you. When McCain returned, broken from the war, Trump was being hit with Fair Housing Act discrimination suit. Trump said he left to a “standing ovation” after speaking at the Family Leadership Council summit. President Barack Obama, who rivalled McCain in the 2008 presidential race, praised the Arizona senator as a “genuine war hero”. To which Luntz quickly said “He’s a war hero”.
Perry, one of the few military veterans running for president, said Trump has demonstrated he has neither the character nor the temperament for the White House.
Many GOP candidates were slow in their response to Trump’s comments as they searched for a way to reach out to Hispanics without alienating traditional GOP voters. “We have so many people who are looking for a reason to be offended”. “It’s not just absurd”.
“If you listen the comments in total, he’s not critical of John McCain the war hero, he’s critical of his Senate record”, co-host Steve Doocy said.
