Walker says he’s not taking position on birthright citizenship right Trump
Walker was on the campaign trail emphasizing his record of taking on the unions and the Democrats in Wisconsin, and even the Republicans. Carly Fiorina and Marco Rubio receive 7 percent each. Bernie Sanders of Vermont surging to 32 percent. Trump was not included in the April list of candidates. It’s all but certain that presidential primary candidates become more liberal or conservative to appeal to the party’s base, later becoming more moderate in a general election to appeal to independent voters.
“I’m not anxious because [Walker’s] state is really in turmoil”, Trump said.
The survey also found that fewer people think Walker is doing a good job as governor. Trump added last week that he didn’t believe “anchor babies” were actually citizens – and the crowded Republican field rushed to weigh in.
Asked whether the phrase “cares about people like you” describes Walker, 37 percent say it does, while 59 percent say it does not. But in the latest poll, a month after he and other Republicans got in the race, Walker’s support dropped to 25 percent.
“I’m not intimidated from anything I’ve faced in Washington or Wisconsin…and I’m certainly not going to be intimidated from Hillary Clinton“, he said. Lincoln Chaffee, Martin O’Malley and Jim Webb each receive less than 1% support. In April, Feingold received 54% to Johnson’s 38%. It now stands at 39% favorable/57% unfavorable; versus April’s rating of 41% favorable/56% unfavorable.
Walker’s support has declined among the state’s Republicans. In that poll, 51 percent of voters said the state was heading in the right direction, and 44 percent said it was on the wrong track. The lead prosecutor in the investigation is still pursuing a possible appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz wants to put an end to birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants, proposing an amendment to the Constitution if necessary.
Then, on Friday, Walker offered another stance – telling CNBC’s John Harwood that he won’t weigh in on birthright citizenship. The governor’s poll numbers in New Hampshire have slipped slightly since the big Republican debate, so Walker will be here to as, he puts it, “Earn the votes of Granite Staters”. Carson is the first choice of 17 percent of watchers and 10 percent of non-watchers. Walker has more generally failed to impress, particularly at the first GOP debate, where he said little that was noteworthy.
“These types of inaccurate statements reflect a lack of understanding of Islam and Muslims that is, frankly, not presidential”, said the council’s government affairs manager Robert McCaw. And as The New York Times noted yesterday, Walker also failed to take advantage of his early lead in Iowa by building a campaign infrastructure ahead of next January’s crucial caucuses.
