An infographic that breaks down what happens in your body after you drink one Coke has gone viral, but health experts say some information in the graphic is exaggerated.
From first sip to 60 minutes later, the Renegade Pharmacist, a blog run by Niraj includes a seven-step breakdown of the drink’s shocking effects.
Thanks to the flashy packaging, sweet flavour and your own cravings, you’ve just consumed nearly your entire day’s recommended dose of sugar.
Insulin bursts in your system after 20 minutes as your sugar levels spike, according to the graphic. (There is plenty of that at this particular moment).
Within 40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. (Do you get that vicious cycle that’s happening?) Your brain’s adenosine receptors block preventing drowsiness (otherwise you’d probably collapse). You excrete bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was meant for your bones, teeth, immune system, etc. You purge out sodium, electrolytes and water.
The makers of the infographic say that within an hour of consumption, we are likely to feel ‘sluggish and irritable.’. Meredith’s infographic might make some of these people realize that Coke can bring you a smile but it also wreaks havoc on your body.
According to a recent Gallup Poll individuals in the US are beginning to cut back on soda, which marks an improvement on a 2012 Gallup Poll that found almost half of Americans drink soda everyday. Making and selling concentrate is a higher-margin and less-capital-intensive business than bottling the soft drinks, it added.
But you don’t know that consuming a carbonated drink can also be risky for your health.
