Yankees game in Baltimore vs. Orioles postponed; doubleheader Saturday
Although it has finally ended, professional sports’ longest-running soap opera was “The Curse of the Bambino”, in which our hapless heroes, the Boston Red Sox, were continually denied World Series glory because of Boston’s sale of Babe “The Bambino” Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919.
No matter what though, I will endure all the pain and agony that’s necessary to see my team fight and earn its way at the pinnacle of the mountain. By limiting the Giants to two runs on four hits over 7 2/3 innings, Anderson reached 180 innings on the season, but more importantly the Dodgers came away with the 3-2 win.
Wasn’t that supposed to be the plan when this Yankees team assembled down in Tampa Florida back in February? Between Bird and the man for whom he has so admirably filled in, the out-for-the-season Mark Teixeira, the Yankees have gotten 41 home runs and 115 RBIs from their 1st basemen this season, and there’s still 3 games to go (in the Baltimore bandbox, no less – and Bird’s a lefty hitting to that nice close right-field wall). One more win will assure that the game will be in the Bronx Tuesday night either against the Astros, Angels, or the Minnesota Twins. Moreover, the Red Sox have clinched the fact that they will not have a protected first-round pick this winter, as there are 10 teams that have accumulated 85 losses this year, meaning that if the Sox sign any free agents who receive a one-year qualifying offer, they’d have to give up their top pick to do so. No veterans seem like trading chips they’d get much back for or they’re so good the Orioles would be fools to let them go.
As for the Rangers (87-72), they now lead the AL West by three games and will need one more win to clinch the division.
The victor of the AL Wild Card game will move on to the ALDS, which gets underway on Thursday, October 8. Pineda bent over at the waist and shook his head, moments before the Yankees began to get a reliever loose in the bullpen. Tim Hudson allowed three runs and three hits in 21/3 innings in the final start of his 17-year major-league career.
And as A-Rod said, in the clubhouse celebration, “We’re in the dance”.
“You’re in the dance, anything can happen”. I like our confidence. “But we have come together the last eight months and it has been a lot of fun”. The 40-year-old Rodriguez played a big part, too, hitting 33 home runs after serving a drug suspension last season.
It was also the 10,000th win in club history. The Orioles have seen a decline in scoring as of late, averaging 3.2 runs during the last 10 games compared to their season average of 4.3 runs per game.
This will be the first time since 2006 that both the Yankees and Mets play in the postseason. And given that no one qualifying for the AL playoffs has a lights-out rotation, I would say that’s still in play even if Holland struggled in September and right-handers Yovani Gallardo and Colby Lewis have their forgettable nights.
He added, “We will never forget what Derek did for this organization”.
