However, conflicting reports emerged about Harper-Mercer’s words as he shot his victims.
Stephanie Salas, the mother of Rand McGowan, another student who survived, said she was told by her son that the shooter asked victims whether they were religious but did not specifically target Christians.
“Don’t worry, you’re the one who is going to survive”, the shooter allegedly told Pastor Randy Scroggins’s daughter.

The gunman, his background and his motive for the shooting are under investigation, Hanlin said.
It is unclear why Mercer carried out the killings.
Mercer said this past Saturday that their son had to have “some kind of issue” with his mental health, while expressing disbelief at authorities’ statement that he was able to acquire 13 guns before mounting his attack.
The victims ranged in age from 18 to 67. They were sons and daughters, spouses and parents.
“Other people think I’m insane, but I’m not”.

She posted several times that her son had Asperger’s syndrome, a mild form of autism.
Officials have said they recovered 14 firearms belonging to Chris Harper, including six that were found at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, scene of last week’s carnage.
Having now spoken after 15 such senseless killings during his administration, Obama again called for “common sense” legislation aimed at preventing gun violence, and he mocked opponents of past initiatives he has pushed.
Survivors had previously suggested that Mercer had left a message for police.
