U.S. tech titans attend Obama’s state dinner for Xi — Hi-tech flavour
Speaking through a translator, President Xi, who recently visited a few of Silicon Valley’s leading technology companies, said that the United States and China would not “knowingly support” such practices and said they would both abide by “norms of behaviour” in cyberspace.
In a joint news conference Friday that dwelt at length on the new agreement, Obama said the us will trust but verify.
“We must recognize that countries have different historical processes and realities, that we need to respect people of all countries in the rights to choose their own development path independently”, he said.
When it comes to China’s role in global development cooperation, President Xi said over the past 60-plus years, China has provided 166 countries and worldwide organizations with nearly 400 billion yuan, and dispatched over 600 thousand workers in aiding the development of other countries.
As Xi embarked on the long-awaited summit with Obama, the two leaders voiced strong confidence in China-US ties.
Continuing high-profile diplomacy during his current tour of the United States, Xi told the UN Sustainable Development Summit here that China will set up the fund, with initial contribution of Dollars 2 billion to support South-South cooperation and assist developing countries in implementing their post-2015 development agenda.
Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch and Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson issued a joint statement on Friday, September 25, outlining the new agreement between the US and China over cyber issues.
“This is progress”, Obama said.
Xi said China and the U.S. fought fascist invasion during the second World War, shoulder-to-shoulder, and safeguarded peace, freedom and justice.
“Relevant construction activity that China is undertaking in the Nansha Islands does not target or impact any country and there is no intention to militarize”, Xi said, using the Chinese name for the disputed Spratly archipelago. This cap-and-trade commitment allows China to increase emissions for years into the future, while President Obama commits the U.S.to sharp reductions that will harm American families today.
In addition to cyber-related issues, both leaders talked about the economy, global and regional challenges, strengthening bilateral military relations and the promotion of the English and Chinese languages in each other’s countries.
Cyberespionage and hack attacks have consisted one of the most severe causes of concern that led to the deterioration of the relationship between the two nations, but reciprocal efforts could bridge that gap and reduce disagreements in this area.
“Countries may differ in capacity for and achievement in development, but they have common yet differentiated responsibilities with shared objectives”, he said.
